A man who fell through ice on the Colorado River was guarded for 30 minutes by his loyal dog before he could be rescued.

The man had been hunting on the river and he broke through after following the dog onto the ice to fetch a goose or a duck.

The distressed dog was running around the ice keeping watch on his master while emergency services figured out how to rescue the man.

Luckily, a few hunters saw the man fall and called 911.

It took nearly half-an-hour before a firefighter finally swam out to the man, who was hanging onto the edge of an ice shelf with his leg outside the water.

The man was treated for hypothermia, but he is expected to be okay.
